The point of my remark was to point out the inadequacy of your suggestion. I am astonished that you imagine that you can dress it up any other way.

The last suggestion is only partially 'messing with grub', but unfortunately will leave the user looking at a one item menu for the period set as default timeout.

When you have found it, most likely at /boot/grub, open it with a text editor and do this - 1. change the line timeout (whatever) to timeout 0 2. change the line default ...

In Abiword use view tab to enable 'Extra' toolbar, click on button with small beta symbol and right facing arrow. In Insert Symbol dialogue use the drop down menu to select your character set. The Help link does not work. Try Abiword's site about any problems.

I have a 486DX Compaq laptop with 334MB HD and (now) a max of 20MB of ram, (originally 8MB running Windows 3.1, later 95). I have copied a DamnedSmallLinux KNOPPIX image and run it as frugal install in a 55MB ext2 partition with a 152MB swap partition. That still leaves a 127MB vfat partition for W9...

You cannot 'save to CD-R' , they're burn once only as Flash has hinted. If you want that option, you must use CD-RW and also choose multisession mode.

The simplest way to slim down your menu is to edit the file /root/.jwmrc with a text editor. Just click file (top left), click the eye button to reveal hidden files, right click on .jwmrc, click open as text. Knock out the line of any program you don't want to see there. Desktop icons? - right click...

devx does not need compiling, it's an extension of Puppy's file system enabling compilation. If you have a frugal install then this applies to you:- Compile source packages. Puppy is a cutdown tiny distro but it is super-easy to add everything needed to turn Puppy into a complete C/C++/Vala/Genie co...

Suggest you boot from DSL, mount the Puppy cd and copy pup-431.sfs, vmlinuz and initrd.gz to the HD.

Then, assuming you can boot from grub, use this menu entry:-

title Puppy(sfs) 431
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=atahd
initrd /initrd.gz
