I should mention that Xubuntu finds the eth0, MiniMe (PcLinuxOs) does not and neither does Muppy, Lighthouse or Teenpup2008. Tigerpup didn't find it either, but it looked awesome.

Ethernet detection on new Del Inspiron 1525/1526

I had a new Dell Inspiron 1525/1526 delivered yesterday and was hoping to make Dingo the main OS, but I played it safe and used Xubuntu to wipe out the installed Vista. Then I loaded Puppy 4 and it works great - except for one thing. When I want to connect to my DSL service with the ethernet connect...

Sorry that I wasn't clearer. The message I posted last night is what happened when I typed granule into the console (shouldn't have called it cli, command line interface). To recap, after installing everything except the atk .pet, typing granule in the console brought up a message about libcairo... ...

Muggins, Thanks for replying! I appreciate it! I tried downloading "atk-1.20.0.pet" (5 or 6 times) and clicked on it in Rog to have it installed. I was told that it was processing, but never got the notice that it was successfully installed (hence I did it 5-6 times and got the same result...

I've been watching this thread and also trying to install granule. I get the same problem that cf13 was trying. I installed the libs (although if I understand the information from the extracting screen we're not installing a lib, but a symlink), and the program says it can't find libgtkmm-2.4.so or ...

Thanks for your input and advice. It's working just great now, but I thought I had tried both using the OOo-2.2.0.sfs and renaming the OOo_215.sfs. Maybe it needed a clean install or something like that, but it is working now. Incidentally, before I got it working, ROX would recognize and mount the ...

Wine and Finale NotePad

Just wanted to let everyone now that I did try putting Finale's Notepad on Puppy using WINE. I used the old Wine-0.9.17.pup and a new dowload from Finale and it worked fine (well except for music playback - I did not check to see whether we could get Notepad playing back through ALSA). There were a ...

Another problem with bootmanager

I am using 217 and seem to be having a problem with the bootmanager. Whenever I try to run it, it tells me that "Sorry, there are no SFS files in directory /mnt/home You will need to download and place one there first." I have OOo_215.sfs and pgs_215.sfs on /mnt/home, although ROX tells me...

Or maybe why not, when someone is making the iso (but not necessarily Barry) why not include all the .sfs files on the disk so that they can be easily copies. Granted this would be terrible for those who have to get Puppy by slow means, but think about what a good distribution disk this would make, ...

What about a puppy version of an old Windows 98 thing that I could never get to work right? Does anyone remember that applet with the briefcase that was supposed to compare and update files in a particular directory? I've done frugal installs both at home (Dell Inspiron laptop) and at the office (an...

printing

Puppy is great, and I keep using it - except when I need to print something (which is like always). lpdq sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. I've gone through downloading CUPS and trying to install it a couple of time, and can't get it to work reliably. AND, being something of a newbie, and defi...

Help on resurrecting an old Compaq laptop

Friends, I'm trying to resurrect an old Compaq Presario 1230 - it works ok, if slow, with Windows 98. It will boot from a CD, but it won't recognize (for some reason) the Puppy CD. So, I downloaded and burned Wakepup (which was very easy) and used that. The splash screen with the Puppy appeared, it ...

Idea - for naming new Puppys

While "Sizzler" is a fine name for 107, and Lobster seems to have picked out "tardis" (did I spell that correctly?), they don't seem to feel the "puppy" theme. What about naming the various new versions of Puppy after different breeds? When we run out of dog breeds we c...

Why are those extra directories in Rox?

I'm putting this here, because I'm pretty sure it's just my newbie problem rather than a problem with Puppy. I have a Dell Inspiron 2650, use a 64KM Lexar jump drive to take files back and forth between work and home -- and by the way, thanks Barry, with Puppy 106, I've gone to using Puppy exclusive...

Barry, You're right, clicking on the file from Rox brings up Gsview just fine - no problem. However, on my computer (Dell Inspiron 2650 1.5gHz), going into the Help area from Menu, brings up your file in Dillo. Clicking on "Textmaker Free Edition" makes Dillo try to load and display it as ...

Textmaker help file unreadable

This is a very small land simple problem, I'm sure, but when I try to look at the Textmaker help file (from Menu -> Help), it's scrambled, like when I try to view a proprietary document file format in ASCII. It's probably nothing important at all, but if Barry is going to include Textmaker in 1.0.5,...

can't print

While I don't completely agree with marcofromfrance, I have to agree with some of his assessments about Puppy and printing. In my profession I have to use the printer. While AbiWord works fine as a word processing program, it doesn't do me any good if I can't print off what has been written. (I use ...
