If there is a newer puppy similar to 5.7.1 I would upgrade. But it should have this OS-encryption feature.
Try:
Tahrpup6.0.2

No offence, but I would prefer to know the person behind the build and not only some ...

What version of Precise are you using?

It does make a difference.

It's 5.7.1

Looking at the specs for this computer, one of the newest versions of Puppy will probably give better support.

Tahrpup 6.0.2
Slacko 5.7
Tahrpup64
Etc...

So Quirky worked like a charm. But it misses a lot of the ...

Copying the module from the newer puppy clearly did not work since the kernels differ in version.

Argghhhh, I am really pissed in the moment. There must be source code for compiling somewhere ... Grrrr !

Is that an installed Puppy or Frugal?

Frugal works on my T43P OK.

It's an installed puppy, I guess.

Similar to the network problem, there is no kernel driver in use for video (lspci -v). Ubuntu uses i915. I also tried this ugly new puppy version from april, which also works fine. It also uses ...

Cannot exit to prompt without freezing system

Problem description:
- precise-puppy seems to boot normally
- GUI (jwm) is shown and working (however firefox crashes)
- when trying to exit to prompt or shutdown, system freezes

The precise-puppy image was configured on an old laptop and is now used on a Lenovo-laptop. That is, the old xorg ...

I downloaded the current e1000e driver version:

3.2.7.1 (you can check this via modinfo)

from sourceforge and compiled it (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS uses 2.3.2). I exchanged the e1000e.ko files and loaded the new module via

modprobe e1000e

Now eth0 is working.

So I checked the messages from boot via dmesg:

Something like (this is copied from https://askubuntu.com/questions/650953/intel-e1000e-ethernet-not-working because I have the real output not at hand):

[Solved] How to exchange ethernet device driver?

I have a new computer and want to use my puppy which I have saved and configured on an usb-device and which successfully runs on an old machine (http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=101288).

On the new computer, Precise-Puppy is not detecting the ethernet device. What I know is, that the ...

With respect to the ethernet interface:

What I figured out so far is, that I have to load kernel module

since this is the module used by Ubuntu. This module exists in precise puppy and I added it to the list of modules loaded during boot.

lsmod

also gives a similar output as in Ubuntu ...

Using an USB-stick worked like a charm ... BUT now I have two problems:

(i) It is not possible to enter pure command line, that is, e.g., shutting down puppy freezes the system. I guess this is a configuration problem of X and the current config comes from the old machine.

(ii) Puppy does not ...

My T43P does.
I have two un-powered USB drives and both do.
You do need to be aware that modern large drives with GPT format or 64k blocks will not be bootable from USB until the USB standard is changed to support them.
At the moment only up to 32k blocking is USB boot supported.

So who is in ...

Lenovo Thinkpad: cannot boot from usb-harddisk

Hi there,

I think similar questions are asked all the time, so, if there is already a solution, I would be happy if you post the link. Using google, I was not successful.

As I mentioned in the subject, I cannot boot from an usb-harddisk with precise-puppy installed. However, on an older laptop ...

Hashing of user passwords

Hi,

again I stumbled over the problem to set secure user passwords in 5.7.1.

Using passwd, passwords of length longer than 8 characters are accepted in general. However, only the first 8 characters are evaluated when checking the password. That is, password "12345678" would be accepted, even when ...

Additonally, to what aaa3 said:

Always backup your puppy save file (i), or make an image of your puppy partition (ii)!

(i) this is trival, simply copy it to some external device;
(ii)

dd if=/dev/<puppy partition> of=<path to backup>/puppy.img

should do it with <puppy ...

This tut is based on the description of aaa3 (http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=32186) and describes how to compile additional kernel modules for encryption. It concentrates on installing xts.ko, other modules work analogously (actually each cryptographic module is compiled ...

How to compile the kernel?

Hi,

I would like to compile kernel 3.9.11 to add additional modules to precise puppy.

I loaded the corresponding devx.sfs and followed

It took over an hour

First of all, your suggestion did not work and I have no nerves to debug this further (some error message about wrong fs-type).

Another thing at least gives a hint:

sudo grep "heavy enc" / -R

gives me the ROX-file-manager-script:

root/.usr/sbin/filemnt

which also mounts save files. Therein ...
