Sadly, it didn't work. When I replaced the xorg.conf file with the one you made, xorg prompted me to probe the hardware after I restarted X.
So much for Linux being customizable.
Thanks for your help, though--I really appreciate it.

Monsie, I must be doing something wrong, as the same thing is happening, as what I described in my last post. It's very hard for me to work on Puppy 5, as I have to wear dark sunglasses and turn the monitor brightness down as far as it will go, for me to just be able to work for about 5 minutes. It'...

Re: How to incrase CRT refresh rate in Puppy 5.10?
I tried the Xrandr method, but 85 apparently is still too low for my eyes to tolerate, though it was only slightly better than 75. So I tried the permanent configuration, which failed (possibly due to user error??). Here's what happened. That said, apparently you can disable the DDC protocol in your...

Wildirish, you might consider replacing your CRTs with flat-screen LCD monitors and TVs. Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately, I can't tolerate LCD monitors at all. (Doing research on the internet, I've found a lot of people share the same problem). That's why people like me have been force...

Monsie, thanks for the info...I'll try it. I know for a fact that my monitor and graphics card can handle a refresh rate of 98, as that's what I'm doing now. (I took the advice upthread and did xrandr, to see what my refresh rate, etc., is while using Puppy 2.0.) So am I right in thinking that, beca...

How to increase CRT refresh rate in Puppy 5.10?
My old CRT monitor gave up the ghost, so I can choose between a couple of "new" ones to put in its place. One's a 17" CRT and the other (which I would rather use, due to lack of space) is a 15" CRT. The problem is, when I use Puppy 5.1, both will flicker and give me a massive hea...

I've solved the problem with the ads that were slowing me down. Older versions of AdBlock Plus, for older Firefox versions are available here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/versions/ You can block the Google Plus button by adding these filters to it: ||google.com^*/plus...

If someone would explain how to add blocked sites to the hosts file, we could simply put sites like Google+ on our blacklist, and they'd never load. If you've ever tried a bare-bones browser like Dillo, sites load very quickly because Dillo simply doesn't load all that extra nonsense. So I'm sure Fi...

Why is the internet so slow when using Puppy 5.1?
I've checked my internet speed, and it's 12 MB, so my connection isn't the issue. It just takes Firefox FOREVER to load all the ads, Google+/Twitter/Facebook links. Why is it so slow? I can't use the AdBlock addon, because they no longer support Firefox 3.6.6 and I have no way of upgrading to Firefo...

By dull video I mean what I see on the screen in terms of background and icons or pages is all dull as if the brightness had been turned down. I'm using Lupu 5.25. When I use the saved sfs and run the xorg wizard using xorg and probe. it suggests the same settings I am already using. :?: I don't kn...

Re: A few things
You've used 2 words to describe what you like of your Puppy - and you've used about 90 words to describe what you don't like of your Puppy. Well, it seemes to be that you don't like your Puppy that much. You counted the words? And I thought I had no life! (Just kidding!) But seriously, it d...

Found it--thanks, CatDude!CatDude wrote:Hello wildirish

Look further down (in the /etc directory) and you will see it.

Where is the hosts file in Puppy 5.1?
I've read online that most Linux distros have it in /etc/hosts, but I don't find such a folder. If someone could tell me where this could be found, I would appreciate it...Searchmonkey hasn't been any help.
Thanks!
Thanks!

In the upper-right portion of a person's post, there's a little button that says Quote. Click on that, and you'll be able to quote someone's post, as I've done with yours.Minnesota wrote:By the way do you know how to reply with the original message in the window?

What sort of files does the university network allow to be transferred? What happens if you wrap up your pet as a Zip archive? If you can successfully post that, just leave a note with the post that the wrapper was needed on your end to do it, and folks should unzip to get the pet. That's what I wa...

How to uninstall .pets from command line?
The Puppy Installer interface stretches beyond what my old monitor can handle, so I want to remove the .pet packages via the command line. I searched the forum, and found this script by jpeps that sounded like just what I needed: command line pet uninstall http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic....

SOLVED: XMMS for Puppy 5.1.0?
I like XMMS because it's similar to WinAmp, so I can use my WinAmp skins on it. The only .pet I can find for XMMS is for Puppy 4.x, so I'm not sure if it will work on Lucid Puppy.
Any advice is appreciated!
