Okay, i followed your suggestion .... ran from live cd, left it for a few mins, shut down ... & it went straight to a black screen ..... tried again, this time with acpi=off (on boot screen it says acpi has been known to cause shut down probs ) it went straight to desktop ( although a little slower ...
