Re: How to automount an USB hard disk on boot

... does anyone know how could I make that external HD mount on boot? I do not know very much about doing this, but are you wanting to actually boot from the external drive? If so, your BIOS would have to be set to look there first, and that external drive would need to have a bootable partition fo...

I finally got everything straight, and here is my final "menu.lst" (with Puppy near the middle): ################################ ;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems. ;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options. [boot loader] timeout=8 ...

Well, I am getting close! As a complete rookie, the challenge here is that of sorting out all the changes from one version of one thing or another to the next. I began here: http://puppylinux.org/main/index.php?file=Frugal%20Install%20to%20Hard%20Disk.txt ... but the instructions there are related t...

I still believe that your BIOS doesn't boot that far. All of this is happening on past the BIOS and inside the first partition on the first drive where both GRUB4DOS and its special menu.lst are located. GRUB4DOS *can* be placed in a boot sector either on a drive or partition, and I *might* see abo...

Try this: put a dummy file named "mymarker" at the root of sdc15 Then use: find --set-root --ignore-floppies /mymarker kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sdc15 Ah, I see your thought there and I will keep that in mind. BTW, you never stated what the error message was from your last attempt. W...

Multi-booting is great, eh?! Depends on how you do it: http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?t=143973 You bet. A friend on another forum seemed impressed with what I am doing, but I already knew I am only a comparative lightweight. Keeping things nice and simple my grub lines would be: titl...

My 3rd hd boots fine with Grub_1 and Grub_2 ... I am definitely impressed, and I warn you: I will glean from you if I can! :) Last night I installed Debian with its own "/boot" and "/(root)" partitions on my third drive, but now I cannot figure out how to boot it. I had told the...

I thank you folks for your time here, and I know I have much to learn. I have printed out the 60+ pages of documentation for grub4dos ... Whew. However, the goal here is to become independent of Windows loaders, and to maybe not even use them at all ... and it looks to me like grub4dos can do that. ...

That would be the 3rd hard drive and the 15th partition on that drive. I highly doubt that's correct. It is. I have three drives, and my Linux partitions for 5 distros plus their in-commons (/temp, /swap, /home, etc.) are all on the third drive. However, I only have Mint and Puppy installed so far....

I had trouble making Easy BSD navigate to sda4 When you go to "Add Entry" in EasyBCD, the *first* thing you want to do is to select your "sda4" (or whatever partition). Then second, check the little box for "Loader not added to MRB (Puppy partition)" unless it is, or e...

Puppy is in /dev/sda4. I gave it it's own partition. Does it have a loader installed right there at sda4? If not, I believe the "Loader not installed on MBR" box in EasyBCD will make EasyBCD install a loader right there on sda4 on-the-fly, then add a link to that loader to Win7's BCD at h...

I'll post back when I get Windoze installed and try EasyBSD. That will work, but you will first have to be sure the Puppy loader has been installed some place EasyBCD can reference, and that *cannot* be sda1 where Win7 has its own loader. I just realized I might be wrong about that, since EasyBCD h...

GRUB has destroyed Win7's boot routine. With Win7, you *must* leave its loader completely alone and use EasyBCD (or some other method) for either adding to Win7's BCD or finding another way into Linux without in any way touching Win7's loader. Believe me if you can -- that experience has been hard-w...

First run Win7's "startup repair" from its installation disk, then install Puppy and tell Puppy to put its loader on its (Puppy's) own partition, then download and use the free utility EasyBCD from within Win7 to add a link to the Puppy loader to Win7's BCD and all will be well! The only d...

I have a partition for Windoze 7, another for Puppy and the rest of the drive is for data, music etc. I have something similar, but with Mint and Puppy on a different drive ... and as someone has suggested, EasyBCD is the simplest way to add Linux to Windows. "GRUB2" is the proper selecti...

GRUB4DOS is not applicable to Vista or Seven since they don't use a boot.ini file. The alternative is EasyBCD. Here is the section of my just-made-it-an-hour-ago "menu.lst" (on "C") that finds Windows 7 (on "F") just fine: ############## title > Windows 7 BCD >chainloa...
