PCMCIA does not work after kernel recompilation
I am trying to recompile the kernel on two ancient laptops, one of them running Puppy 4.1.2 retro and the other running 2.17.1 nolzma-seamonkey-fulldrivers. In each case the recompilation works fine, but after rebooting the system can not use any PCMCIA cards. That's a big deal, because those cards ...

How to set the icon text color in 2.17.1?
Puppy 2.17.1 Retro is working well on my 1997 laptop, but when I set a black background the text for each icon becomes invisible.
In later versions of Puppy the icon text color automatically changes and there is no problem.
Where is the icon text color defined in Puppy 2.17.1?

Hello, although it is almost two years later, today I am trying to make PCMCIA cards work on a Gateway Solo 2100. Here is what I have found so far: 1) PCMCIA cards are different from PC cards. PCMCIA is the older technology. PCMCIA cards have a plain connector, while PC cards have a gold stripe and ...

I have Puppy 4.1.2 Retro running well on a Thinkpad 760XD that was manufactured in 1997. It has 104MB of memory, a 166MHz Pentium MMX processor, a modern 320GB hard drive, and no USB. I did a hard disk install, including a 1GB swap partition. The good: Puppy boots my machine in 102 seconds. It has g...

Mwave sound card is not supported
Some ancient systems like the Thinkpad 760XD have an "Mwave" sound card, and there is no driver for it in Puppy.

.pet files for command line versions of FTP and XV
Please consider creating pet files for FTP and XV. Even though Puppy already comes with software that will transfer files, grab the screen, and display images, I would very much like to have the familiar tools that I use all the time on other systems.

Customizing a few special things after a successful install
Puppy Linux 4.1.2 with the 2.6.21.7 kernel is running pretty well for me on an ancient 104MB 166MHz IBM Thinkpad 760XD. No other distribution works as well on such old hardware. I did a hard disk install and then added the devx SFS file. Now the system supports C, C++, Perl, and bash. The standard L...
