The first problem is that the HSO mode switcher was left out of puppy 4.3.1. I have sent windowsuser a package to test with. I will include this in my next modem fix pack (6).

I will be happy to work with you to get this sorted. There must be a lot of others with this type of modem. I would like to see the modem detected and functioning as I am keen to use Puppy for my internet. Until we get the USB stick functioning I won't make any changes to my current installation.

I had tried the erase according to your instructions, but that didn't fix it. On boot up it still came back with the same. I won't mess with my hardware setup, as you suggest.

How do you remove the internal modem? Step by step pleaseee, and once removed is it gone forever or could I get it back whenever I need to?

Deleting a frugal Puppy is, as mentioned, just a matter of deleteing the few Puppy files:
vmlinuz
initrd.gz
pup_XXX.sfs
pup_save_XXX.2fs save file if you have one
and sometimes a zdrv_XXX.sfs

But should you ever wish to delete puppy and revert back to Windows...if you previously used Puppy's grub ...

yes, I did try the pupdial. I got the response that modem detected, which appeared to be the internal dialup modem instead of the USB modem.

I checked that the modem is in hardware system info and it does show Globetrotter HSUPA modem, so it's definitely recognised as in the hardware.

I guess that's just the internal dial-up modem I have, not the USB.
