I have corrected 3 typos in my post - the main one being that I connect through VGA not RGB.
Thanks for your thoughts. I didn't realise that there was more than one widescreen ratio.

Is there a way to force X to start at 1920x1080?
Using Puppy precise 5.5 I have a 1920x1080 HDTV which I can connect to my PC through the VGA connector. If I boot with the TV then X starts at 1024x768. Shep, My guess: The modem can store groups of settings. ATDT*99***1# uses the first group and *99# uses the default group.
