emachines WalMart netbook
4.3.1 works on emachines em250. I don't think the webcam is recognized, Won't boot from SD card. Otherwise, I'm happy. $228.
BTW, WIN7 starter, included on this netbook, may pleasantly surprise you with startup and shutdown times. And the webcam works.

python for CCSM doesn't install
The python for CCSM.pet file doesn't install sucessfully using 4.3.1. I don't know what to do with a .pup for the required files.
Maybe some folks don't know that the passwords for the main file are puppy and linux.
The PySol.pet installs fine, but I'm having trouble with the required extra files ...

http doesn't download to petget
These links should start with ftp, not http, for petget to start the download. You will get a scrambled mess on your screen if you click those ibiblio links.
ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/pet_packages-4/

how I did it
I have some games, they came in a package of 3 or 4. They installed, but didn't end up in the menu. So I just click on them in ROX. I suppose I could just drag the icon from ROX to the desktop and they would run from that. Haven't tried it, tho.

Firefox memory hog
Far as I can tell so far, it's Firefox stealing all my memory and making it impossible to shutdown without getting out of X with ctrl/alt/backspace.
From a quick search, it looks like I'll have to change some stuff using about:config, such as:
browser.cache.disk.capacity .......5000

I just downloaded my wife's whole website, very cool. She has a front page that you have to click, so the very first page is all I got on the first try. But the next page URL did the trick. Amazingly easy, haven't checked all the pages of course, it's got more than a thousand. But I'm just thrilled ...

My CD of 2.16 will connect (dialup, GKdial). My CD's of 4.1 retro and regular and 4.2, which use WVDial, always fail, at different points in the connection to the ISP.
It seems WVDial is not waiting long enough for responses. What can I do?

Dialup was connecting fine, now not
So here I am, happy as anyone with Puppy 4.2. Then the dialup provider does something to screw up my connection.
XP will connect fine, and I'm posting now from Puppy 2.16. GKDial works most of the time for me. But with 4.1 and 4.2, pupdial will not successfully connect. It seems like from the text ...

backing up
No one has mentioned, maybe because it's so obvious, that a copy of your Puppy CD would be a good idea, too.
If you're using NTFS file system on the jump drive, you can copy the pupsave in XP to your hard drive, for example. I'm pretty sure the pupsave isn't available to copy when it's being used ...

If you have USB, it should be easy to run Puppy from that. USB 2 is much faster, hope you have that. I installed Puppy on the hard drive on my old laptop with USB 1, no CD, and it will works, but too slow for some things. More memory isn't recognised, or it would be fine.

no pupsave when using multisession
I a noob, but I have had the same wish for a way to save settings from multisession save files into a single pupsave file. A big drawback using multisession is that a CD will fill up fast if you reboot every day or more frequently. Each time you shutdown, a save file (not a pupsave) is written, and ...

How about trying an older version of Puppy? One post mentioned 4.1 working fine. Still a nice version.

disable or not?
I'm going to try not saving until shutdown as MikeB does. I guess all I could lose is one session anyway. Any contrary thoughts on this?
Thanks!
Thanks!

slightly related question
When I'm browsing or playing a game, anything that's changing what's in RAM at the moment, should I stop?
It seems the save takes longer if something's happening. Maybe just my imagination, I haven't timed it or anything.
Is it possible that if the info in RAM is changing a lot, the save would go ...

re: failed installs
I was just reading a post on a failed install that talked about removing the [1] in the filename and trying again. If I find the instructions again, I'll post here.
But even though the installer said it failed and I'd have to clean it up, and said it was already installed, dragging the main file to ...
